About Beat Crafter

The quick and simple drum sequencer for musicians.

What is Beat Crafter?

Beat Crafter is a free, browser-based drum sequencer that lets you build rhythmic backing tracks in seconds. No downloads, no accounts, no setup — just open the page and start tapping out a beat.

It was built for musicians who need a quick practice companion: guitarists running scales, bassists working on groove, horn players woodshedding changes, or teachers running a music lesson. Dial in a tempo, pick a style or program your own pattern, and you have an instant rhythm section.

Features

How to Use Beat Crafter

1. Pick a style or start from scratch. Choose from rock, pop, funk, jazz, reggae, latin, or hip-hop presets — or clear the grid and program your own beat step by step.

2. Set your tempo. Dial in any BPM from 40 to 240 using the stepper arrows or type a number directly. The beat adapts instantly, even while playing.

3. Customize your pattern. Tap any cell to toggle a drum hit on or off. The grid shows 16 steps (one bar of 4/4 in 16th notes). Mix kick, snare, hi-hats, clap, open hi-hat, and ride to build your groove.

4. Save and share. Save your beat to browser storage, copy a link that encodes your pattern to share with bandmates or students, or export it as a JSON file to keep forever. Import any .beatcrafter.json file to load beats from others.

How It Works

Each of the 6 tracks represents a drum sound. Tap the grid cells to toggle steps on and off. The sequencer loops one bar of 4/4 time at whatever BPM you set. Hit play and the beat runs — change tempo, add or remove hits, or switch styles while it's playing. Every change is live.

Behind the scenes, Beat Crafter uses the Web Audio API to synthesize drum sounds in real time — no samples to download. Timing is handled by Tone.js, which schedules playback with sample-accurate precision. The whole app runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Privacy

Beat Crafter runs entirely in your browser. Your beats are stored in your browser's local storage and are never uploaded to any server. When you share a beat via the copy-link feature, the beat data is encoded in the URL itself — no server-side storage involved.

The app uses Umami, a privacy-first analytics service, to understand how people use Beat Crafter. Umami does not use cookies, does not collect personal data, and does not track you across sites. No consent banner is needed under GDPR. No data is ever sold or shared with third parties.

Created by

Beat Crafter is built and maintained by Severin Bruhat, a musician and developer who wanted a dead-simple practice tool that just works. No feature bloat, no accounts, no distractions — just a grid and a play button.
